The ASAL Humanitarian Network (AHN) is a network of over 30 locally-led organizations advancing humanitarian leadership, development programming, and peacebuilding across Kenya’s arid and semi-arid lands. It promotes coordinated action to strengthen locally-driven responses and elevate frontline actors in humanitarian and development systems. Through evidence-based advocacy and collaborative program design, AHN ensures that community voices shape policies and interventions. Institutional capacity strengthening remains a cornerstone of the network’s work, building sustainable service delivery systems and enhancing risk management among member organizations. Tailored, integrated responses address the unique challenges faced in ASAL regions, driving resilience, inclusive growth, and long-term social and economic transformation.
We anchor our work on four strategic pillars that drive our mission to promote unified, locally-led action and build resilient ASAL communities. Through these pillars, we strengthen the leadership of frontline actors, advance the localization agenda, integrate humanitarian, development, and peacebuilding efforts, and foster innovation and sustainable solutions. Our strategic framework enables us to deliver coordinated, context-specific interventions that address the complex challenges facing ASAL populations and advance inclusive resilience and long-term development.
We drive policy influence and localization by amplifying community voices, promoting transparency, and strengthening accountability mechanisms across the humanitarian, development, and peacebuilding sectors in ASAL regions.
We strengthen the capabilities of local organizations by investing in operational excellence, leadership skills, and sustainable systems that enable effective humanitarian, development, and peace interventions.
We generate evidence, foster innovation, and advance learning to inform advocacy, strengthen programs, and ensure adaptive, data-driven solutions that respond to emerging needs in ASAL communities.
We integrate humanitarian, development, and peace actions through climate-smart approaches, coordination platforms, and partnerships that build resilience and reduce vulnerabilities across ASAL regions.
The ASAL Humanitarian Network (AHN) drives collective action across Kenya’s arid and semi-arid lands through its strong coalition of local organizations. Our numbers reflect the reach, strength, and resilience built through localized leadership, strategic partnerships, and community-driven initiatives. Each figure represents our commitment to advancing sustainable solutions that respond to the unique challenges faced by ASAL communities.
