The ASAL Humanitarian Network (AHN) strengthens the knowledge ecosystem that underpins effective, context-responsive action across ASAL counties. Through the Research, Innovation and Learning pillar, AHN enables its members to generate actionable evidence, adapt programming through structured learning, and pilot innovative approaches rooted in local knowledge systems.

Strategic investment in knowledge generation ensures that local actors can shape programming and influence policy from a position of evidence and expertise. AHN does not conduct direct field research or implementation; instead, it facilitates partnerships with research institutions, convenes learning platforms, and promotes innovation processes that are member-led and community-informed.

 

This pillar embeds a culture of inquiry, reflection, and solution-focused adaptation across the network. Member organizations are supported to design evidence-driven programs, test localized solutions, and contribute to the growing body of knowledge on what works in complex ASAL contexts.

 

Collaborative Research and Evidence Generation

AHN facilitates partnerships between member organizations and research institutions to co-produce practical evidence that informs decision-making and policy engagement. Field-based studies, data analytics, and participatory research methods are prioritized to fill evidence gaps and validate locally relevant approaches.

  • Joint research initiatives with universities, think tanks, and knowledge hubs
  • Applied studies on climate resilience, displacement, pastoral systems, and livelihoods
  • Integration of community-generated data and indigenous knowledge systems
  • Utilization of research outputs in strategy, planning, and advocacy

Learning Systems and Knowledge Sharing

AHN promotes a network-wide learning agenda that encourages continuous improvement, reflection, and peer-to-peer exchange. Member organizations receive support to institutionalize learning mechanisms, document results, and share best practices that contribute to sectoral advancement.

  • Facilitation of cross-county learning forums, digital exchanges, and joint reviews
  • Development of learning products, toolkits, and experience reports
  • Support for member-led after-action reviews and knowledge dissemination
  • Platforms for peer learning, south-south collaboration, and thematic knowledge clusters

Innovation for Contextualized Solutions

AHN accelerates the uptake and scaling of locally led innovations that enhance the effectiveness of humanitarian and development responses. Support is provided to member organizations to co-design, test, and adapt scalable solutions anchored in community realities and operational feasibility.

  • Innovation labs and design-thinking workshops led by local practitioners
  • Piloting of appropriate technologies including solar energy, digital tools, and mobility solutions
  • Strategic partnerships with private sector actors and innovation accelerators
  • Scaling pathways informed by field feedback, performance data, and user engagement
