African Humanitarian Organisations Unite to Advance a Continental Voice for Local Action
Africa Humanitarian Organisations Network (AHON) – Building Collective Power
The Africa Humanitarian Organisations Network (AHON) is a newly formed platform that brings together more than 170 African humanitarian organisations with a combined annual turnover exceeding USD 85 million. The network emerged from deliberations during the African Union Humanitarian and Pledging Conference held in May 2022 in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, marking a pivotal step towards realizing the AU’s vision of African Solutions to African Problems.
AHON seeks to strengthen solidarity, learning, and joint advocacy among African humanitarian actors, ensuring that local organisations have a collective voice in engaging with the African Union, regional bodies, and national governments. Its members include women-led, refugee-led, and grassroots organisations, each contributing to humanitarian response efforts across climate, conflict, and economic crises.
Through its mapping exercise of 185 members across Africa, AHON has demonstrated the depth of African civil society engagement and the growing capacity for home-grown philanthropy and locally-driven humanitarian financing. The network continues to engage with AU institutions, including the AU Food Security and Nutrition Summit, advancing a continental approach to resilience and humanitarian effectiveness rooted in African leadership and solidarity.
