Alliance2015 and ASAL Humanitarian Network Joint Statement

Kenya’s Drought Crisis Demands Equal Attention and Urgent Funding

Partner Statement – 2022

In the context of the Horn of Africa drought crisis, the Alliance2015 network and the ASAL Humanitarian Network (AHN) issued a joint statement urging global and national actors not to overlook Kenya’s worsening humanitarian situation. The statement warns that Kenya has experienced four consecutive failed rainy seasons, with a fifth anticipated by the end of 2022, pushing millions into hunger and malnutrition.

FEWS NET projections indicated possible IPC Phase 5 (Catastrophe) conditions in parts of Kenya’s ASALs, with six counties at Emergency (IPC 4) and eight counties at Crisis (IPC 3) levels. Over 942,000 children required treatment for acute malnutrition. Alliance2015 members—including ACTED, Concern Worldwide, Welthungerhilfe, Cesvi, and others—together with AHN members, shifted their programming to emergency response through cash transfers, integrated nutrition support, and WASH interventions across counties such as Turkana, Marsabit, Isiolo, Tana River, and Kajiado.

The statement calls for:

  • Urgent, equitable funding to prevent Kenya’s crisis from being overshadowed by Somalia’s situation.

  • Medium-term recovery investments to restore livelihoods and diversify income for agro-pastoralists.

  • Continued support for locally led humanitarian responses, leveraging national NGOs for effective reach.

  • Stronger early warning and early action financing mechanisms to mitigate drought impacts before escalation.

The appeal reinforces the principle that effective humanitarian response in the Horn of Africa must be localized, timely, and equitably resourced across all affected countries.
