Background
The 2021-2022 drought has been the longest in recorded history and the most severe with massive livelihood losses and widespread displacement of people. As at April 2022, Wajir county was listed as one of the adversely affected regions in Kenya, with more than 45% of its population acutely affected by the drought. This situation put at great risk the livelihoods of the populations who greatly depend on pastoralism for their livelihoods.
Food insecurity within the predominantly pastoralist was at an all time high due to failure of several rain seasons. This results in reduced pasture for their livestock, high levels of malnutrition among children and vulnerable adults, longer trekking distances to access safe and clen water and the high risk of gender based violence.
Intervention
- Multipurpose Cash Assistance(MPCA) in the form of three (3) monthly cash transfers at 50% of the prevailing Minimum Expenditure Basket (MEB) equivalent to KES 9,255 per month to 776 vulnerable HHs (5,844 people)
- Rehabilitation and solarization of three strategic boreholes and increase in capacity of seven other boreholes
- Mapping out of protection referral pathways to facilitate access to comprehensive care to SBGV survivors and those at risk
- Training of Community Health Workers to carry out health promotion among the communities
- Capacity strengthening of implementing partners to participate in the county drought response coordination forums
Achievements
- MPCA of three-monthly cash transfers of KES 9255 per month for 776 vulnerable households (5844 people)
- Improved access to safe, clean and adequate water for 27,464 people
- For the provision of safe and adequate water, the mitigation of health risks, and the safe delivery of the program for drought affected populations, 38,195 people (19,003females and 19,192males) (8,594 women, 8,602 men, 10,409girls and 10,590 boys) were supported to access WASH services including WASH NFIs.
- Improved positive hygiene practices
- Improved knowledge on identification, prevention and reporting of GBV incidences
- Strengthened drought response coordination at county level with the active participation of local organisations
