Malnutrition has emerged as a pressing concern in drought-affected regions, primarily due to the limited essential resources like clean water and adequate food. Droughts intensify malnutrition due to crop failures, livestock losses, and reduced access to clean water sources, all of which collectively contribute to food insecurity and malnutrition. In response to this critical challenge, WOKIKE with the invaluable support od USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (USAID/BHA) initiated a comprehensive assessment of the affected population within communities in Sangailu, Hulugho Sub county.

The primary objective was to gauge the extent of malnutrition and identify specific health needs among the affected population. Of specific interest was vulnerable populations like children below five and pregnant and lactating mother. This endeavor involved various activities such as population surveys, nutritional assessments, and analyzing the prevalence of diseases related to malnutrition.

Among the beneficiaries of this vital outreach was four-year-old Rahma who upon initial screening was found to be suffering from malnutrition. Without delay, little Rahma was admitted to a supplementary feeding program for three months. With time Rahma’s health condition showed remarkable improvement highlighting the effectiveness of the nutrition program facilitated by WOKIKE in Garissa county. Additionally, WOKIKE also conducted a number of activities to curb the malnutrition rate including but not limited bi-weekly integrated medical outreach which has been consistent for the last three years which led to improved health for infants, pregnant and lactating mothers.

WOKIKE and its partners remains committed to safeguarding the livelihoods and building resilience of Garissa county residents, one child at a time. Together with the generous support from USAID/BHA, the organization is making significant progress in alleviating malnutrition and nurturing a healthier and more resilient community despite the climate shocks.
